Roux en-Y gastric bypass is the mostly commonly studied weight loss surgery.
Currenlty the main indication for Roux en-Y gastric bypass is obesity with gastroesophageal reflux disease.
The expected weight loss with the operation is more and it is more durable if compared to laparoscopipc sleeve gastrectomy.
The expected weight loss is 60-70% of excess body weight after a year
Complications:
- Leak; 1-2%
- Marginal Ulceration: the main risk factors are smoking, use of a class of pain medications called NSAIDs and H. pyolri infection. There are also other procedure related factors. The incidence is about 10% and mostly managed medically
- Internal hernia in about 5%. It could happen years after surgery. The key is early identification and
- Chronic abdominal pain; in about 10% requiring extensive work up and rarely unexplainalbe
